TSAVO Our first baby and the inspiration behind The Backwater Sanctuary, Tsavo is a gorgeous Thoroughbred ex-Racehorse. He was retired early with an inflamed front fetlock which affected his speed on the race track. Sadly, most retired racehorses are either put down or abandoned, as their upkeep can be expensive. Tsavo was given to a local riding school where he was extremely neglected. He arrived at The Backwater Sanctuary in July 2017, severely underweight and wounded. He also suffered from rain rot (bacterial skin disease), resulting in sensitive bald patches all over his back and rump. He had scars all over his body and an especially problematic wound in his lower hind leg that took nearly a year to heal fully! Despite the abuse, Tsavo maintains a gorgeous personality. Her previous owners had deliberately brought her in late at night to hide the awful state she was in. Transported on the back of a pick up truck, she was roped down tightly on her side, unable to get up or even move. The trauma of the journey had taken a toll on her. Her left eye was extremely swollen and bruised (human inflicted), she had a deep hole in her leg which was badly infected and leaking puss (we believe a nail had pierced through) and severe rope burns on all four legs. She was weak, traumatised and in a lot of pain. A heart-breaking case of pure neglect and abuse. For the first few days she couldn’t stand on her own and would quickly collapse without support. The real reason Savannah recovered so quickly was because she had Tsavo with her the entire time. It was through their interaction that we learned to never underestimate the importance of companionship/social needs of equines. Leg-Stump arrived at The Backwater Sanctuary on 4th May 2018. We found him on the side of the highway hobbling on 3 legs. He was so sweet natured and so utterly gorgeous that we instantly fell in love. As he was wandering the roads, we had no idea who he belonged to or whether he was simply abandoned. After many calls and many conversations, we were finally given the green light to bring him home. The story about his leg is heartbreaking - the local village people were burning waste on the side of the road and he accidentally stepped into a pool of burning plastic. His right leg caught on fire and melted his hoof nearly clean off, leaving an awkward stump behind. He may be slightly disabled but as long as we can provide a safe and comfortable environment for him, there’s no reason at all why he won’t live a happy life. In the years he was with us, LegStump came into his own and developed a curiously quirky personality. He loved to explore the property with his little donkey herd and he lived a peaceful, content life on the backwaters. It broke our hearts when Leggy unexpectedly left us in 2020 - An altercation with a stronger donkey left him in a poorly state and a few days later, he passed. We found them on the side of the highway (like LegStump), abandoned but reasonably healthy and happy that they had each other. Luigi and DonkeyKong, the two males, are quite possessive of Peach, our pregnant female. Where she goes they go. Peach has a wonderfully naughty personality and loves escaping into the backwaters, with the two boys close behind. They love to graze by the lake while playfully evading all attempts to catch them. He's the alpha male of the herd, formerly known as leader! Hannibal is amazingly protective over his companion, Zelda, never losing sight of her. Hannibal was an ex race horse who was bought by a rich family and then neglected. He was locked in his stable with no food, water or exercise for days on end. He was rescued on 23rd August 2018. When he arrived at the sanctuary he was extremely malnourished and filthy. He hadn't been washed or groomed for for months and had crusted urine and poo stuck to his coat. His tummy was unusually bloated as well, another sign of malnutrition. When he first arrived, Hannibal’s teeth were a mess, no surprises there given how neglected he was. This was one of the reasons why despite slowly increasing his feed, he wasn’t putting on weight as fast as we’d hoped (with bad teeth, horses are unable to chew properly and digestion is compromised). Boris was rescued on 23rd August 2018. When he arrived at The Backwater Sanctuary he was literally a walking skeleton, extremely malnourished with 0% body fat/muscle. We later learned that he was so starved by his previous owners that he’d even developed a habit of eating his own dung, also a sign of mineral deficiency. Boris’s bodily reserves were almost entirely depleted and his immune system was practically non existent. After consulting our amazing equine vets, we were told that his recovery will be long and hard. After a year of careful feeding, he’s finally started to put on condition. When he first arrived, Boris’s teeth were a mess, no surprises there given how neglected he was. Fortunately we had no owners to deal with (no surprises there, who would want a crippled pony riddled with infections) and so four days later, Gambit came home. Poor Gambit had obviously been through all kinds of hell. His coat was miserable and covered in rain rot, he was infested with fleas/ticks and worms and likely had a fungal/bacterial infection all over his skin. Like Sawyer, he’s blind in one eye and both front fetlocks are completely deformed. After consulting with both our farrier and vet, it seems like his front legs were run over by a vehicle, crushing his pasterns and leaving him flat footed. He also has a large lump just under his chest, between his forelegs. He must be miserable out in the rain with little grass to graze, hobbling around on the hard tar roads. Not to mention the traffic that was probably narrowly missing him. He was found by another shelter, who then contacted us about taking him in. We couldn’t refuse. Frodo arrived a couple days later, tired but excited to explore his new home. Rather than being happy with the other ponies, Frodo chose to be part of the horsey herd, ie Zelda, Hannibal and Boris. A hobbit amongst the giants, he is such a determined little pony, we are in constant awe of his undying spirit. If you sit back and watch him for a day, you can literally see his gorgeous little face shadowed with concentration as he calculates his next move. With his broken leg, Frodo must make the most of every step and so each play is loaded with strategy and the sanctuary is his chess board. He’ll quietly gauge his surroundings, asses the various opportunity costs and then a there’s the moment, where the lightbulb goes on in his mind, and he’s off. Born September 30th 2018 at 11:40 am. This little one wasn’t expected for another couple weeks at least, so she was a premature foal, very tiny and very weak. She should have been up on her feet an hour after being born, and nursing soon after. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to stand without support for a good 8 hours nor was she nursing. We tried to hold her up to the mums teat but she wouldn’t latch on. As a last resort we collected Piper’s milk hoping she’d drink from a bottle at least. The first milk, or colostrum, is extremely important for the foal as it’s filled with antibodies to help fight infections. Luckily she took to the bottle. The first 24 hours were crucial, she needed to be bottle fed every twenty minutes, day and night. We managed and she made it! It’s only right that the first Backwater born baby has a heart on her forehead. A true representation of what we believe in here; Love. Having spent most his life on the busy city roads, avoiding traffic and running away from screaming kids throwing stones, he was extremely shy/scared and skittish. Now Sawyer, Picket & Gambit have their own little grassy paddock, where they graze lazily together all day. Millie frequently visits them and has a gorgeous little bond with Sawyer. She know’s he’s the softest in the herd and so will always choose to share his bucket of food during feed time. He of course, lovely as he is, allows her. In just six months Saywer transformed. He is now a gorgeous little flaxen chestnut, with a stunning coat, perfectly healthy weight and the sweetest, most gentle personality. He lives a happy and stress free life with plenty of peace and quiet and his two companions. Zoha took them all into her home in the city until their paddock/stables were ready at the sanctuary. They arrived at their forever home a few days later. When we first saw Pickett, his coat was dull and covered with old wounds and scars. He was terrified of everyone and everything but was still the sweetest little pony, always did as he was asked. Her mother Peach was rescued from the streets in April 2018, when she was about a month or so pregnant. A donkey’s gestation period is between 12-14 months. As the months rolled by, Peach looked more swollen and by the 9th month we could confirm a healthy pregnancy. Having spent nearly all of her pregnancy period under our care with fresh grass and plenty of hay all year round, Peach gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby foal. Bisous has grown into a beautiful young lady, with a wonderfully wild spirit. As peach, Lu and Donkeykong were ill treated in the past, they had lost trust in humans. When they arrived at the sanctuary, we noticed this and decided to leave them wild and free with zero human interference. They’re the happiest donkeys you’ll meet. Bisous has had zero human contact now and is happiest left free to roam our land. Pod and his mother Gypsy were abandoned on the streets of Mysore - he was just a few hours old when we received a call about them. Since both mother and foal were healthy, we left word in and around the area they were found to try and locate an owner. Fortunately or unfortunately, no one showed up. A week later they came home. Podrick was quite weary when he first arrived, shying away from any interaction. He warmed up soon enough though and took to the sanctuary like a duck to water. You can’t help but feel overwhelmed with love when you see him go about his day. When he’s not annoying his mother (who’s got the patience of a saint) or trying to interact with the other horses through the fence, you’ll find him out cold in the middle of the paddock, enjoying an afternoon nap, his tail swishing lazily as he dreams about life on the backwaters. Millie’s already got a little crush on him (no surprises there, he’s stupidly handsome) and she’s jumped the fence right into his paddock a few times now. Not sure how Gypsy feels about that but Millie’s taking her chances. Pod of course doesn’t mind one bit. When he entered their stable however, instead of being greeted by the usual two horses, Abhi, saw a little third face staring back at him. And then proceeded to have a heart attack. How this happened, we have no idea. In fact, we didn’t even know Savannah was pregnant, she never showed any signs of pregnancy. Maybe because of her age it was harder to tell, her stomach had barely distended (we associated the slight swell in the belly to the change in diet from oats to barley!) which coincidentally happened a couple months before she gave birth. Anyhow, we put two and two together and the culprit here was Frodo, our unstoppable, broken footed stallion. How he escaped his paddock and managed to impregnate Savannah, all the while evading both Tsavo’s and our watchful eyes, is a mystery to us all. But there you have it.
