CAIRO

This is the story of Cairo the camel.

It all starts with Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary - aka BMAD - an animal shelter in Chennai who, two months ago, rescued this beautiful boy known to them as Akbar. Here’s more about the rescue in their words, “...Hailing from Rajasthan to Cudalore and then being abandoned by a circus troop, Akbar was found with wounds all over his body, completely infested with maggots, in terrifying shape. We rushed to Cudalore 2 months ago, when we heard about him. The people there threatened to have him slaughtered if we didn’t get there soon.”

BMAD already have a beautiful rescued camel at their shelter and couldn’t take in a second. When the manager, Shravan, told us that Akbar would be slaughtered if they didn’t rescue him quickly, and that in order to do that they needed to find him a forever home, we were already picturing a camel running wild and free on our backwaters. There was no need to ask twice.

The team at BMAD dealt with the hardest part, working fast to get him safely to their shelter and healing wounds that were probably some of the worst we’ve ever seen. Two months later, after a stunning recovery, Akbar’s vet, Dr. Josika and his two caretakers drove nearly 20 hours across the border, to bring Akbar to us, determined to make sure he’d have a smooth transition and settle in well before returning to Chennai.

Now, we do our bit to make sure little Cairo will never know pain or fear ever again. He will be loved and spoiled and fussed over and free, everything these animals deserve after a life of unimaginable pain.
